Planned Maintenance -
Information for tenants whose home is being rewired

Due to new safety regulations on completion of all rewires a consumer board with an R.C.D (Residual Current Device) is fitted in all properties. The purpose of this unit is to monitor and detect any faulty appliances.

It does this by detecting an earth leakage from an appliance. If a fault is detected it will ‘trip’ the circuit, reducing the risk of electrical shock.

However, the new system is highly sensitive and in some cases tends to ‘trip out’ appliances that previously would not have been affected. The sensitivity of the system is designed to give you maximum protection.

It is highly unlikely that a circuit ‘trips out’ because the electrician has made an error during installation. The fault usually lies with one or more of your appliances. However the electrician should be able to trace the faulty appliance and advise you on the best course of action.

Connection of fridges and washing machines

If a rewire has been undertaken within your kitchen, certain switches on your worktop will be labelled ‘washing machine’ or ‘fridge’. It is important that these switches are switched to the ‘on’ position in order for the individual appliance to work.

If you experience any problems with the electrics in your home after it has been rewired please contact your Development Officer or call the help desk 0845 123 5627.
